Well, ladies and gentlemen, if you’re looking for a cheap deal on well-made but exceptionally homely hats, look no further!

I have a batch of Whole Foods promo caps (made by my hands) in two styles that absolutely must go-go-go-go! /used-car-sales-ad-voice

Hat #1 is a dubious two-tone affair in the painter’s cap style. Will comfortably fit up to a 23.5″ head. $10

Hat #2 is also a dubious two-tone affair in the painter’s cap style. Will comfortably fit up to a 23.5″ head. $10

Another $10 beaut, this 100% indestructible polyester masterpiece will fit up to a 23.5″ head and will last for pretty much ever.

$10 takes it. Same specs as the hat above but with one fewer logos. Slightly less garish, perhaps, but still pushing the envelope of incredibly bad taste.

Another $10 hat – this time with but two logos. Damn near tasteful, if you’re really into mustard and ketchup. Fits up to 23.5″ head comfortably.
Here it is on a real head, in brim-up position.

The piece de resistance, and at only $10, this 3-logo hat has a slightly feminine flair with the loose-edged red-net frill peeking out from behind an appliqued logo.

One might inquire why I made, have, and am personally selling a lot of hideous hats with Whole Foods logos/slogans all over them, and if you weren’t inquiring, you probably should have been.

The reason behind this is that I’d been commissioned to make these hats as part of a promo/samples scheme, but after they were all finished, the folks who would have had to wear these hats flatly refused to let something so disastrously ugly come even near their heads. I managed to fob off two of the hats, along with this shower-cap monstrosity (thrown in gratis) but I’m stuck with the above six and am just plain sick of looking at them. @ $10/ea, I’m not really even recouping the time it took to make these, not to mention well as supplies (interfacing, contrast fabric, thread, twill tape, and labels). I just would like to get something for my time, as well as to get them out of my sewing room!

So, if you like Whole Foods stores and really ugly hats, now it the time to buy.

Both painter’s cap and cycling cap styles have been posted to the Etsy shop for your browsing pleasure.

Go ahead and see what’s new!

As You Like It Designs offers you an exclusive and special deal – the $20 necktie hat!

Vanessa modeling her new AYLI Hat.

Bring me a necktie of your choice and $20, and I’ll make you a hat based on its fabulous fabric. Neckties come in such a charming array of colors and patterns, and the fabric from which they are made is typically quite nice; silks of various weights are common.

I select complimentary fabric from my extensive stash to make the best of your old necktie.

For Vanessa’s hat, I paired up her subtle diamond-print silk tie with some lightweight, striped lining fabric salvaged from the inside of a sleeve of a business suit I’d dismantled for another hat project. I liked the combination of fabrics so well that I had to layer up a stack of naïve applique hearts to make more extensive use of the felicitous pairing.

Jeff’s necktie hat was fashioned from a broad, brocade tie and some stout, grey corduroy.

Depending of the width and style of your tie, it could become the central panel of a hat, like Vanessa’s or it might be possible to cut side panels from it, like Jeff’s hat. I am exploring other hat styles based upon old necktie fabric, so look forward to an announcement of a new design coming up soon.

In the meantime, here are a few more detail shots of Vanessa’s and Jeff’s hats:

I want to give enormous, heaping thanks to everyone who came out to the swap meet & checked out my wares, and even bigger thanks to folks who made purchases or made arrangements for custom orders.

Let me just say that you’re only encouraging me!

Of course, my normal enthusiasm led me to significantly overstock for the swapmeet, so come back soon and see what I’ve got up on Etsy. There will be many new items in my shop as soon as I get a few solid hours to photograph and post them.

Also, while I’m here and on a roll, I want to recommend that you check out Re-Velo, which is a super cool line of accessories made from re-cycled bicycle innertubes. If you’re in the market for an indestructible and water resistant wallet, this is well worth a look-see.

I’ll be at the famous, annual Everything Bicycle Swapmeet with a wide selection of hats in several styles and many colors. You can choose from subtle, somber fabrics or the wildest, most flamboyant combinations I have made to date. A range of my new Painter’s Cap styles will be available, as well as my classic, Italian-style cycling caps, and possibly a few mystery styles.

I’ll be offering discounts off my online prices, as well as the opportunity to arrange for custom work.

Come and check it out!

For the heck of it, I decided to try out the painter’s cap pattern on some very lightweight red-and-white gingham, plus do a little applique on it:

This is what I ended up with. This one is for my own use, but I’m going to be turning out a few more of these cuties, as well as some stripey ones reminiscent of an old-fashioned railroad engineer’s cap. Keep watching…some fun stuff is coming up pretty darn soon!

I’ve been playing around with a new style, inspired by painter’s caps. The #1 prototype is out and about on Joel’s head, and the one pictured above is the first of the production models. Look forward to this style in summer-weight wool and crisp cotton, coming soon!

I’m going to be moving As You Like It Designs main page away from Wordpress onto a self-hosted site (though it will be still run through a Wordpress template) and so things may be a little wonky around here this week. Please bear with me!

Also, please bookmark my webstore at Etsy because I am going to be loading some fresh new styles up there this week, too!

Busy…

Busy….

Busy!

I just posted a dozen fresh new hats up on Etsy.com today.

If you are a Kansas City dweller, you can also check out a selection of my hats at Acme Bicycle Company.

Hope you see something you like!

Just a quick explanation about the hats on offer right now:

These are hats I cut out about two years ago. They are all approximately sized to fit up to a 23″ head with about half an inch of ease. The chances are good that they will be too small for most guys. I’m aware of this problem, and have drafted a new set of patterns to address this. Soon, I will be offering hats in Small (up to 22″) Medium (up to 24″) and Large (up to 25.5). I will be posting those as soon as they become available.

In the meantime, check out what I’ve got going on right now, and if your head is 23″ or smaller, you may find yourself in luck!

Just because, here are some pictures of hats I already had made, and a few detail shots of some of my new designs. When the spools of twill tape I ordered get here, I’ll finish off this run of new hats and get them up for your viewing and/or purchasing pleasure.

Cheers!

Michelle

The infamous-famous monkey hat…which inspired another:

I have a very limited amount of the monkey flannel left, so I will be making a very short run of one-monkey hats…They’ll be announced with glee and fanfare when they become available.

7-17-07 055 7-17-07 058
One of the very first run of hats which has yet to be sold or donated (several of my first run of hats were donated as prizes in the first Kansas City Cranksgiving)

Another of the first-run hats.

I’ll be making some modifications to the hats left over from the first run. Currently, they feature a terrycloth sweatband inside the lower edge of the crown, and I will be replacing that with a natural cotton twill tape. This will allow for a slightly roomier fit and a smoother overall silhouette. I think they will also feel cooler in warm weather without that thick terry band.

I have other hats from the first run that I need to modify and post, but from today’s selection, I think you can get a bit of a feel of what I’m up to and what you can look forward to. Lots of color, unusual prints & trims, vintage and re-cycled fabrics, and a whimsical, humorous take on the traditional three-panel cycling hat.
